4 THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT BREAST REDUCTION SURGERY

Women who have very large breasts often deal not only with physical problems such as back pain, discomfort and recurring rashes, but they often deal with the emotional distress of carrying too much volume and weight in their breasts. Also known as reduction mammoplasty, breast reduction reduces the weight and volume in the breasts to help women feel more comfortable and improve their self-image. If you’re considering this life-changing surgery, here are four things you should know about breast reduction:

It has one of the highest satisfaction rates among cosmetic procedures. Very large breasts can lead to chronic back, shoulder and neck pain and impact daily activities such as work and exercise. Often patients complain of the neck and back pain, skin irritation or rashes under the breasts, and bra straps leaving grooves on the shoulders from the weight. Breast reduction patients are often the most satisfied patients because of the dramatically improved comfort and functionality.

The procedure is often outpatient but may require a one-night stay in the hospital. The procedure takes about 3-4 hours on average. Depending on the extent of the surgery, very large reductions may require an overnight stay in the hospital.

Insurance often covers some or all of the costs of surgery. Because abnormally large breasts can cause such pain and discomfort that impact your daily function, some insurance companies will cover part or all of the cost of surgery. After your consultation, you will work with our office and your insurance to determine what will be covered so you know all your options before making a decision.

You can return to work and social activities in a week or two. Patients are expected to be up and moving the day after surgery. You can expect tenderness in the breast area for a couple of weeks as they recover. You’ll return to your surgeon’s office for a follow-up appointment to remove stitches and bandages.

Breast reduction surgery can be a life-changing procedure for women, who often wish they had done it years before once they realize how good they feel. Schedule a consultation with Dominion Plastic Surgery by calling (703) 544-8971 today.
