In less than 30 minutes a few times a year, you can improve the appearance of wrinkles such as crow’s feet around the eyes, the “11s” between your eyebrows and forehead lines. BOTOX® erases wrinkles caused by facial expressions such as frowning, smiling, laughing and squinting. Here are five other facts about the most popular non-surgical cosmetic procedure around.

BOTOX® is a safe wrinkle eraser. This neuromodulator is derived from the botulinum toxin type A, which is the same bacteria that cause botulism. It may sound scary, but it isn’t. BOTOX® was FDA-approved in 2002 for the treatment of lines and wrinkles on the upper third of the face. It’s also used to effectively treat migraine headaches, excessive sweating and many other conditions.

BOTOX® works on dynamic wrinkles. Dynamic wrinkles form due to muscle contractions under the skin and occur mostly on the expressive upper third of the face. BOTOX® blocks the nerve messages from the muscles to the brain, temporarily halting muscle contractions. Without these contractions, wrinkles don’t form.

BOTOX® treatment is considered a “lunchtime” procedure. A session only takes 30 minutes or less and is virtually painless. There can be slight bruising at the injection sites, but the tiny needle is used to inject BOTOX® minimizes this risk. There is no downtime, so you can return to work and regular activities after your session.

The results are seen in just a few days and last up to 6 months. It takes about 4-7 days for BOTOX® results to take full effect. Results last for 4-6 months. At that point, the body absorbs the BOTOX® and muscles begin contracting again, producing wrinkles and lines. You’ll want to return for another session at this time to maintain results.

BOTOX® can be combined with dermal fillers for maximum results. Dermal fillers such as Juvederm® treat volume loss and static wrinkles, which are always present. BOTOX® cannot improve the appearance of these wrinkles.
